After much research on noise-cancelling ear phones, including re-reading David Pogue’s NYT analysis of the four best options, I ordered the Sony MDR-NC200D Digital Noise-Canceling Headphones from Amazon.
Don’t!
The headphones arrived within two days, as expected. I put them right on and was shocked. The headband didn’t go around my head. It was a triangle shape which (1) pressed hard into my head – ouch – and (2) had a sharp edge on the band which cut into my head — ouch-ouch.
I didn’t think it was possible to return things to Amazon, but I looked it up and found easy instructions, in fact, they were super-easy. Print out the return label, put it on the box and drop the box into a UPS drop bin.
Then came the shock. In less than five hours, I had an email from Amazon saying that my $199.99 + shipping refund of $6.17 had credited to my credit card! Amazon didn’t even know that I’d been able to carefully open the Sony packaging, so it would be easy to re-sell the headphones.
This is customer service beyond anything that I had imagined.

You’re probably wondering why I didn’t just go ahead an spring for Bose noise-cancellers, which Pogue says is far and away superior to all of the competition. Well…I try those comfortable headphones on at least once a year over at the Apple store, hoping that someday Bose will figure out how to cancel noise without creating a vacuum that makes my brains feel like they are being sucked out of my ears.
