LARAMIE, Wyo. — For thinking I wasn’t paying much attention to getting ready for my 50th high school class reunion, there have been some pretty peculiar actions over the past several months.

Yesterday I had my big toe nails painted with swirly daisies and glitter. A coincidence?

Today, I weigh 14.4 pounds less than I weighed at my annual physical in January. “I think I need to lose about 12 pounds,” I said to my doctor. “Yes, I think you do,” she said. Oh. So I ate less and drank less and am still losing. A coincidence? [Have you seen that email joke: “I can still fit into the same earrings I wore in high school?”] My high school Pendleton pleated skirts might be a little tight, but not much. I’m only 3.4 pounds heavier.

It probably was only the humidity-frizzed, dyed-dried, bad hair days during this 105-degree summer in DC, that I spent $175 and 72-hours getting a Brazilian blow-out in the hopes of thick, lustrous, straight hair.

And surely it was a coincidence that I came out of winter with pimples and itching dry skin, and a few months ago, went for dig-’em-out facials, which, proved so good, that two weeks ago, I succumbed to the $300 light pulse treatment, which was supposed to get rid of blotchy skin, sun spots and broken capillaries around my nose. Why now? Oh, it just seemed like a good idea.

Of course the sun spots aren’t gone, but they are fainter, and indeed, my face doesn’t itch and I only have a few underground whiteheads.

So I am looking back at this series of capers and wondering: Does this have anything to do with going to my 50th high school reunion?

Answer: I don’t know.

But, as Travis McGee once said: “I believe in coincidences.”
